Midwifery Course


Standard program subject to variations in accordance with each specific event

Day 1

  • Registration of the participants and introduction to the Midwifery course
  • I trimester of pregnancy
  • II trimester of pregnancy
  • III trimester of pregnancy
  • Physiology of childbirth
  • First stage of labor
  • Second stage of labor
  • Third stage of labor
  • Cardiotocography (CTG) befor labor
  • Cardiotocography (CTG) in labor
  • Simulation of childbirth with vertex presentation

Day 2

  • Pathology of fetal growth
  • Pregnancy pathology
  • Pathological CTG patterns according to ACOG and scenarios
  • Childbirth pathology (dystocias, abnormalities of presentation etc.)
  • and scenarios
  • Postpartum pathology and scenarios (PPH, atonies, inversions etc.)
  • Instrumental childbirth
  • Puerperium pathology
  • Evaluation Test
  • Closure of the session

Midwifery Course target audience:

  • Midwives and delivery room assistants

Methods:

  • Number of participants: 30
  • Simulation workstations: human-like gynaecological and childbirth simulator which allows to create realistic scenarios of delivery room in not physiological obstetric conditions.
  • Number of teachers: 5 (Students-Teachers ratio is 6:1)

Materials:

  • Practical simulator of physiological and pathological childbirth
  • Simulator of CTG patterns
  • Simulation of delivery room teamwork
  • Simulation of childbirth with vertex presentation
  • Simulator of dystocic childbirth
  • Simulator of postpartum urgencies and emergencies
  • Simulator of episiotomy and episiorraphy + vagino-perineal lacerations of 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade
  • Human-like gynaecological and childbirth simulator which allows to create realistic scenarios of delivery room in not physiological obstetric conditions.

The Hands on session is organized as follows:

After learning and discussing the basics of pregnancy physiology, the attendants will simulate the interpretation of the various stages of labor and of physiological CTG patterns; they will also simulate team work in the assistance of simulated physiological childbirth.

In a second step of the course, after learning and discussing the basics of pregnancy pathology and childbirth labor, the attendants will be involved in team work simulation reproducing the main pathological scenarios of childbirth labor and delivery (dystocia, abnormalities of labor, instrumental delivery, PPH, uterine atony, uterine inversion, etc.).


Course learning goals

After completing the course, the attendants will be able to:

  • Acquire the basic principles for the correct interpretation of labor, childbirth and postpartum physiology
  • Perform a practical simulation of delivery room scenarios related to labor, childbirth and postpartum physiology
  • Perform a practical simulation of interpretation of a physiological CTG
  • Perform a simulation of physiological childbirth with vertex presentation
  • Be prepared to manage an intervention on episiotomy and postpartum vaginal and perineal lacerations
  • Manage the most frequent pathological scenarios of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum
  • Perform a correct interpretation of pathological CTG patterns in pregnancy, childbirth labor and postpartum
  • Perform and appropriately read an ultrasound examination in labor
  • Interprete and manage scenarios such as:
    • Post partum haemorrhage (PPH)
    • Uterine inversion
    • Instrumental extraction
    • Shoulder dystocia
